Aaaand here's the OUABlog OUAT Forum (Just in Time to Discuss Last Night's Episode)

Next up on the Once Upon A Blog Forums for fairy tale folk: the OUABlog OUAT forum! (Heh.)

If you haven't been following recently, as you can see from the banner above, the Wicked Witch of the West has taken over the second half of this season and, at this point, we're kind of grateful she did. Overall, the Oz factor is a plus.

Since I wasn't on such a huge learning curve this time around in creating a forum, I took a little extra time to start off some topic threads and pose some questions, getting ready for you all to talk about Sunday night's episode "Bleeding Through".

I know it's always hard to be first on the scene but we'd love to see what you have to say. I know there are a ton of OUAT fans among my readers and now's a chance to show your love, share your wishes and express your "if only!" bugaboos.

Here's the link: OUABlog OUAT Forum and you should see a OUAT Forum tab at the top of the page, under the header, that you can access any time.

And here's what it looks like at time of writing... again with some extra text and arrows to show you around.

What are you waiting for?

Let's chat!

"Once Upon A Time In Wonderland" Series Premiere Tonight

The Once Upon A Time "limited series" spin-off Once Upon A Time In Wonderland, begins tonight. Although some of the story lines and their players will be familiar, none of the actors from OUAT will be reprising their roles. We will, though, be treated to a whole new host of (quasi) familiar characters, most of them behaving somewhat differently from what we've seen in past versions of their stories (eg. Caterpillar, Jafar (as a genie), the White Rabbit, the Red Queen and lots more to come).

There has been a continual stream of teasers and spoilery leaks since ComicCon so there's plenty to find on the web if you're having trouble waiting for tonight.

Initial test screenings report a lot of soap-like drama and (what people hope to be incomplete) below-average effects but "Alice" (Sophie Lowe) has been given a lot of praise for her acting chops and is said to portray a very refreshing version of Alice so we'll just have to see how it goes.

With the limited episode aspect, Wonderland is going to be a test case for series spin-offs so viewer response will be closely watched by the networks. I'm curious to see if this is the start of modern-mini-series revival.  If so, the case is good for other fairy tale projects  - and possibly more independent ones as well - to come to TV. While I'm reserving judgement on Wonderland for the moment, I'm excited for the potential this programming model makes (and it will all have started with a fairy tale).

Free Preview "Once Upon A Time In Wonderland" (the first 20 mins anyway)

Naveen Andrews as Jafar (in genie form and still causing trouble)
I'm not sure if you guys are excited about this spin-off or not. I'm... waiting-and-seeing myself... BUT if you're super excited and want a preview (and aren't going to drive yourself mad by not being able to see the rest of the episode) you can click below for a free preview of the first 20 minutes of the first episode.

D23 To Present OUAT: Behind the Fairytale

Not listed in their previous event line-up, Disney has announced that Once Upon A Time will be showcased at D23 as well. Although much may be a repeat of Comic-Con, you know Disney will have it's own few exclusives.

I find it interesting that the OUAT team are presenting "Behind the FAIRYTALE" and not "Behind the FAIRY  TALE"... but perhaps that's what they'll be talking about - the idealism behind the show, rather than fairy tale content/influence.

Press release:
Executive Producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz will be featured at a panel titled ‘ABC’s Once Upon A Time: Behind The Fairytale’ on Saturday, August 10 at 1:00 p.m. at Stage 23. Eddy and Adam will talk about exciting developments for season three of their hit series ‘Once Upon A Time’ as well as their new fall series, ‘Once Upon A Time In Wonderland,’ which takes place in the Victorian England of Alice and the strange new land that exists on the other side of the rabbit hole. The Q&A with the executive producers will be moderated by D23’s Jeffrey Epstein.
Guests on the D23 Expo show floor are invited to come aboard the Jolly Roger for a swashbuckling good time with some of your favorite fairytale characters from ABC’s hit series Once Upon A Time. Explore the famous pirate ship and feast your eyes on original props from the set. You will also find Snow White, Prince Charming, the Evil Queen, Captain Hook, and Emma Swan (and Emma’s red leather jacket). Every pirate who boards the ship gets to visit the Evil Queen’s vault. And a surprise awaits when you unlock a box from Regina’s wall of hearts. No pirate will leave empty handed! (Edit FTNH: That means, every one who goes aboard and visits the Queen's vault of hearts will come away with a souvenir.) Don’t let this exciting adventure sail by without you!
In addition, as previously announced, guests will be able to get an up-close-and-personal look at some of the elaborate costumes from Once Upon A Time inside the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives exhibit located on the second floor of the Convention Center.
They won't be the only "costumes" on display either. The designer princess gowns will be getting window fronts as well:
There is an amazing display of exclusive gowns inspired by Disney’s Princesses making their U.S. debut at the D23 Expo inside the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives exhibit. These designs by top designers will be available for viewing, August 9–11 at the Anaheim Convention Center. These Dresses are inspired by the stories of the Disney Princesses by Ralph & Russo (Tiana), Versace (Cinderella), Elie Saab (Aurora), Marchesa (Ariel), Escada (Jasmine), Missoni (Mulan), Roberto Cavalli (Pocahontas), Jenny Packham (Rapunzel),  Valentino (Belle), and Oscar de la Renta (Snow White).

The stunning dresses were first showcased in a set of window displays at Harrods, the luxury store in Knightsbridge, London, during the 2012 holiday season.
There's also word of "exclusive screenings" which would, if they got the wording right, means they're going to screen something they didn't already show at Comic-Con but I haven't heard any speculation (or excitement) about what that might be since I think the reveal stage is pretty much done now. Still, we may be surprised.

The Saving Mr. Banks presentations have been slightly expanded in description as well but it's all still a little vague (possibly on purpose!). We do know the film already has a PG-13 rating, suggesting it's both complete and been before the required review boards so there's a good chance any Saving Mr. Banks screenings will have a decent amount of footage (possibly all - sometimes there are such surprises kept on purpose).

* You may be wondering why on earth (heh) I used an image of a Snow White/Avatar mash-up. The reason is two-fold: 1) it was made by a Disney fan and 2) it reminds me of a project I'm very sad isn't going to see the light of day in the foreseeable future - Disney's The Order of the Seven:
'The Order of the Seven' takes the idea of the seven dwarves and transforms them into seven highly skilled martial arts masters, each from a different part of the world. Set during the 17th century, the disparate international masters are all part of a centuries-old order who have lost their way when a chance encounter with a fleeing Englishwoman and an unrelenting evil that pursues her gives the men a chance at redemption and a new path to follow.
Another description:
Order of the Seven initially was set up by producer Andrew Gunn as a live-action kung fu take on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs but later evolved into a fantasy-action adventure tale. The story centered on a young woman in 19th century Hong Kong who escapes her wicked stepmother and takes refuge with seven men belonging to an ancient order dedicated to fighting demons and dragons.

Out of Comic-Con: OUAT Season 3 Trailers & Spoilers (Hidden)

Out of San Diego Comic-Con come all sorts of wonders, including much anticipated sneak-peeks of new shows and next season reveals. Once Upon A Time didn't disappoint.

The trailers for Season 3 shown below have NO NEW FOOTAGE (ie spoiler-free) but they're a good summary to remind you of what the set-up is for next season.

There was, however, new footage shown which hasn't been publicly released yet. One is from some DVD extras which will be available on the Season 2 Blu-ray (& DVD) and the other was a preview from Season 3. We can't show it but we can describe it.

The most details appear to have come from Entertainment Weekly so I'll post excerpts from there:

First the non-spoilery DVD extra which sounds fun:
There was also (during the screening) a quick “commercial break” – a morning show called “Good Morning Storybrooke,” hosted by Yvette Nicole Brown and Paul Scheer featuring dating advice from Dr. Whale and a low budget commercial for Mr. Gold’s pawn shop. “If you lived it, I have it!” Robert Carlyle narrated in the clip – noting that all the significant magical objects from the show have found their way into his hands. (The full episode of “Good Morning Storybrooke” will be available on the season 2 DVD.)
Here's the trailer for "GMS":

And now for the Season 3 sneak peek description....

Fairy Tale RoundUp For SDCC (San Diego Comic-Con) 2013!

My favorite of J. Scott Campbell's new Fairytale Fantasies illustrations - being released at San Diego ComicCon 2013

I haven't had much time this week to stay up to date on all the San Diego ComicCon fairy tale related goodness but I wanted to at least list it for you so that you can investigate more for yourself if you're interested (or already going) and to make it clear that fairy tales are big business right now - whether main stream, indie or in the Geek universe.

Here's a run down, in no particular order. All the links take you to pages with more information about when during SDCC they will be appearing, the times, booths & rooms and any extra preview info (note: if you can't see the show you clicked on at the top of the page they will be further down in the line-up list):

*The animated pilot is getting a lot of buzz and interest. Zenescope's Grimm Fairy Tales use fairly tales and set them in a largely horror genre. They've had many, many issues and been popular for many years but the animated series is a first. More on that in a bit.

Other Fairy Tale Friends at SDCC 2013:
The Faun: Limited release at SDCC 2013

  • Acclaimed indie filmmaker, Lisa Stock of InByTheEye will also be there from July 17 to 19th, promoting her new film Hell and other projects. A true mythmaker, Lisa creates myth and fairy tale films and other works (including a stage adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Snow, Glass Apples) and has much more fairy tale related goodness underway that I hope to be sharing very soon.
  • Speaking of Neil Gaiman, he will also there on the 19th and, as usual, in great demand over everything from his comics to his books. He will be speaking on panels and presentations, including talking about his new "fairy tale for adults" book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane.
  • Joss Whedon will be there for Dark Horse comics talking about what's next for him (including the Buffy movie rumors).
  • Other topics and shows that may be of interest to fairy tale people: Game of Thrones, The Hobbit II, Seventh Son, Sherlock (apparently this is a very popular among fairy tale fans!), Doctor Who (don't you think the Doctor makes for a very different sort of Beast? ;) and The Walking Dead (yes - this is also popular among fairy tale people. I may have to post on why one of these days...), Hannibal, True Blood, Supernatural, Arrow, the pilot of Sleepy Hollow (Ichabod Crane gets thrown into the future) and Dexter.
In case you are wondering Bill Willingham (Fables) will NOT be attending SDCC this year so we're unlikely to get any further scoops on the Fables film in development at this time.

Hollywood giant, Disney, is also (largely) MIA at the San Diego ComicCon this year with only having a presence via their newly acquired Marvel properties and the ABC series OUAT & OUATinWonderlandFrozen and Saving Mr. Banks will be spotlit at Disney's own expo D23 in the following week or so.

If you have any other tip off for fairy tale folks attending, please put them in the comments and I'll send out a FB and Tweet to let people know as well.

We've Been Promised: No Wandering in Wonderland!

Did you know Once Upon A Time in Wonderland is a LIMITED new series? Meaning, it's not supposed to continue forever but instead have a beginning, a middle and AN END?

*eyebrows raised in an "I'll believe it when I see it" fashion*

Yet we've been promised: there will be no wandering about in Wonderland just for the heck of it.

From OUAT
By "no wandering" I mean, show creators Horowitz and Kitsis have promised there will be NO FILLER EPISODES for Once Upon A Time in Wonderland. (Wut? But these are the Lost boys...)

Apparently they're so happy with the response to a show that hasn't even aired yet that they've ordered more episodes but are crossing their hearts that they "kick their bad habit of unnecessary plot dwindling", as iO9 put it.

(Seriously? These are the creators of Lost... )

So what does that mean? It means the entire story is to be plotted in advance.

Here's an explanation of how it's all supposed to work, from Entertainment Weekly:
When Wonderland was announced as a limited series in May, it received 13 episodes — the standard order for a new drama... But Wonderland creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis have a different vision for this show: a self-contained epic romance that’s planned in advance from start to finish — no filler! [Edit FTNH: emphasis mine.] That means there will be no additional episodes ordered for the season beyond the first order, so the showrunners can break down the entire story before the first episode ever airs. That’s why there are more episodes being ordered now-ish, because the writers have figured out how many hours they need.
“We really want to tell the story without having to worry about how to stretch it for five years,” Kitsis tells EW. “The upfront order will be it for the season.” Horowitz adds, “This is not meant to be a 22-episode season. Whatever it ends up being, we’ll have told a complete story, with a beginning, middle and end.”
A Wonderland Romance
But, but... these are the creators of Lost!

Hold on... I have further clarification: "limited" doesn't quite mean what we (would normally) think it means...
Wonderland has been called an “anthology” series and “limited” series. Neither is precisely correct.
I KNEW it!
It’s only “limited” in terms of the first season telling a close-ended story in less than 22 episodes, not because ABC and the showrunners wouldn’t do more seasons (ABC executives may be willing to get a little creative with Wonderland, but they’re not Mad Hatters — a hit is a hit). ABC will renew the show for another close-ended adventure if the show is a success. [Edit FTNH: emphasis mine.]
But unlike an anthology series — such as American Horror Story, which tells an entirely new story each season with new characters — Wonderland is expected to continue using most of the same characters. “If the audience responds and people love these characters, the plan would be to bring it back next year and tell a whole new story,” Horowitz says.
Put another way: Wonderland is sort of like a fairytale version of 24 — a heavily serialized drama with stand-alone seasons using the same core cast (only with fewer rogue nukes, presumably).
Ah. That sounds like the showrunners we're familiar with. *eyebrows return to their rightful places*

Once Upon A Time In Wonderland: New Promo

Once Upon A Time In Wonderland is very busy trying to get our attention.

Would you like the new & just released shorter promo version on the Love Conquers All theme...?

...Or the (much!) longer one with the mini-story "Nothing Is Impossible In Wonderland"?
(3:36 mins)

News keeps appearing about various characters, Tumblr blogs dedicated to the show are already appearing and there's even a forum already well into discussion and speculation about what's going to happen and how...
I am actually more intrigued than I thought I'd be with the shorter promo as it did grab my attention more than the longer one (although OMG the cheesy FX does kill scenes from time to time!). I'm hoping the editor who worked on the short promo gets to have input on the editing of the show.
Fairy tale bonus of the day (sort of): As we all know (but easily forget), editors can make or break a movie or show. I will be forever grateful for the editor who revealed the true nature of Mary Poppins in the "Scary Mary Recut Trailer" She did always creep me out as a kid... If you're interested, but worried about the visuals, don't be - you've seen it all before - it's just presented very differently to how Disney does.
The Mad Hatter character in OUAT is one of the more solid and well thought out characters for me (and the actor really knows how to make the best of his lines!) so I'm very curious to see if the established "Once Wonderland" characters will be integrated, or if this is pretty much a separate envisioning. As far as I'm concerned, Hatter can join the party any time!

Phew! I guess Fall is approaching more swiftly than we realized...
